Leadership Activity: Beneficial For Non-Leaders
For some, leadership is an innate quality, while others aren’t so lucky. Some don’t have the leadership quality it takes to lead a group. For the ones who aren’t natural born leaders, it’s beneficial to find a good leadership activity to get them into the habit of leading a group of people, whether they are in a social or professional setting.
Make It a Game
A leadership activity plays out like a real leadership scenario. However, by making it fun and interesting, it takes the pressure off the person who might otherwise be shy or timid in a group setting. By treating it as a game, the person is more relaxed and more likely to learn something.
The best leadership activity is one that lets the person experience what it’s like to be both leader and follower. This will breed fairness in the person learning how to lead. By knowing how others would want to be treated, the person can learn to be a more effective leader.
A leadership activity involves a group of people who are learning how to be effective leaders. One person will ‘play’ leader and will lead the others towards a common goal. Then, that person will become part of the group while someone else leads the group. Everyone should get a chance to play both roles.
The idea is to constantly change the goals and leaders to increase difficulty. By constantly challenging each person in the group, it will allow the person to think on their feet, just as they would have to do in a real leadership situation.
Anyone in an authority position should participate in at least some form of leadership activity. This includes teachers, managers, executives, as well as assistant managers and shift leaders.
However, leadership does not just involve occupations. Even social groups have and need leaders. Some people don’t like constantly going along with the group. Some people would like to be more assertive, more aggressive towards personal goals. These people, too, will benefit from a good leadership activity.
Good Leadership Ethics
It should be stressed that in any leadership activity the goal is to create good leaders. Being a leader does not mean that are better than anyone else or should take advantage of anyone else. Good leadership ethics should be a part of any good leadership activity.
A good leadership activity will make good leaders. Not everyone can lead a group but everyone can benefit from a good leadership activity.
